Peak Limiter

The peak limiter is a common tool for modulation control in the radio broadcaster’s arsenal, and was invented by radio engineer Edward Jordan, who was Edmonton-based CKUA’s first control room operator.

As Marylu Walters writes in her 2002 history of the station, CKUA: Radio Worth Fighting For, the device "would control the modulation and prevent the station from being shifted off frequency or knocked off the air entirely by loud noises, lisps or sopranos hitting high notes."

Jordan’s peak limiter became cutting-edge technology in the early days of radio in North America, and earned him his master’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Alberta in 1936.
