Arctic Chiller Water Bottle

On first consideration, the Arctic Chiller water bottle appears to be an example of good marketing over function. Aqua coloured, decorated with studs and facets, and capped with a traditional—though multi-coloured—pull-tab, the plastic container does nothing special to physically enhance the water it contains. However, in an industry where image can be everything, no bottle similar in design had yet appeared in 1995, and it lent Dave Hygaard’s product a certain cachet.

By 1997, Hygaard Fine Foods of Sherwood Park, Alberta was shipping up to 35,000 bottles per week of spring water sourced from Valemont, British Columbia to markets in Canada, the United States, Korea, Japan and Hong Kong. In May 1996, Hygaard won the best package design award from the International Bottled Water Association.

By 2000, Hygaard’s North American rights for the bottle ran out, and he was limited to marketing Arctic Chiller in western Canada only. However, his bottles and water were sold under several labels, including, Blu Botol on the U.S. East Coast, and as Arctic Chiller and Gold Stream mineral water for Merlin Foods Ltd. of Chicago. He also bottled and shipped water for the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas.
