Provincial Government

Alberta's Innovation System

The Legislature Building is the home of Alberta Legislative Assembly. Elected provincial representatives meet here to debate. As you can discover in the section on federal policy on innovation, the Government of Canada is committed to transforming the country's economy by drastically increasing spending on research, development and innovation in the country. Their "Innovation Strategy" outlines a strong initiative to recreate Canada as a knowledge-based economy and establish Canada as one of the top five research and development countries in the world. Alberta has responded to this strategy by creating a provincial innovation strategy—Alberta's Innovation System.

Accordingly, the Government of Alberta has invested a great deal of resources to research, development and innovation, establishing a working relationship between government, universities and private-sector enterprises.

Alberta's Innovation System recognizes that Alberta is a prosperous province where citizens enjoy a high quality of life. It also upholds that much of the province's prosperity is the result of a rich legacy of natural resource wealth coupled with visionary people who lead the province in research and development (R and D) and encourage the province towards development of these resources.

The system identifies numerous benefits from scientific innovation and research, including

  • Thousands of new jobs that have been created, especially from the $13 billion investment in oilsand development
  • Employment opportunities that have arisen from investment in new, mechanical-pulping technology that will utilize Alberta's aspen forest
  • Over 27,000 high-quality positions and $150 million of tax revenue per year that are generated by Alberta's investments in wireless telecommunication
  • Up-to-date health care services resulting from Alberta's cutting-edge medical research facilities

Alberta's Innovation System places a heavy emphasis on all partners in innovation, including individuals—the people who are involved in knowledge-based industry, and who apply innovative ideas and concepts to improve Alberta's economy, communities and environment. The following corporations, ministries and agencies included in this section all participate in Alberta's Innovation System.
