Saw Filing Machine (Patent No: 460537)

Inventor: Johnston, Styner T.(sic)

Location: Calgary

Comments: N/A

Description: Styner T. Johnston. Calgary, Alberta, Canada Application July 12. 1948. Serial No, 577.092
5 Claims

Claim.—1. A saw filing machine comprising a base with an upright frame substantially supporting the machine, upright stationary jaw members integral with the frame, a jaw member radially pivoted at its base to the frame base to register at its upper end with the said stationary jaw for guiding a saw between the two sets of said jaws, a screw bolt and handle to bring the jaws together and slidably mounted for height adjustment on a vertical post integral with the frame, rollers for supporting the saw during filing, a pawl slidably mounted on said frame to engage the teeth of the saw, a hand lever link-mounted with respect to the said pawl and pivoted on the frame for shifting the saw by a pulling action, a stop on said frame to adjustably limit the stroke of said lever to regulate the pitch length of the saw teeth, a pair of slide rods slidable in brackets when form part of the frame structure, a pair of file-holding sockets mounted on said rods, means to adjust one of said sockets securely on said rods for varying lengths of files, and a handle to reciprocate said rods, sockets and file relative to said stationary rod bearings for filing the saw.

2. A saw filing machine as described, comprising in combination a frame substantially supporting the parts of the machine, jaw members mounted on the frame to support a saw slidable therebetween on rollers attached bearably to the frame, a pawl to engage the teeth of a saw, a link pivoted to said pawl and coupled to a slide member, a guide member on the frame for bearably carrying said slide member for its reciprocal operation by a hand lever pivoted on to the frame for operating the pawl to shift the saw by pull on said lever, and with a lost motion return, adjustable stop means to limit the radial movement of the said lever, and a spring to maintain the said lever in its open position for the pawl to hold the saw securely in place.

3. In a saw filing machine, the combination of a supporting frame, a stationary jaw as part of said frame, an upright swingable jaw pivoted to the base of the frame, a hand-operable screw bolt mounted adjustably slidable for height on a centre back post of the frame to carry a circular saw, and to regulate movement of the swingable jaw, means by pawl lifting and coupled link and slidable connection with a hand lever to pull the saw tooth by tooth, a spring controlled and pivotal vertical over adjustment screw to regulate the depth of a saw tooth cut, adjustable screw stops to limit the radial movement of said lever for regulating tooth pitch, slidable means associated with said frame to manually reciprocate a file transversely for tooth cutting and filing, and a reliable carriage to which the saw is clamped.

4. All as in claim 3 with a bracket vertically adjustable as regulated by said overhead screw and bearably supporting a pair of slide rods from which a file slidably depends, an arm extending rearwardly from the top of the machine frame to both ably support, with a bracket, the ends of said rods opposite to said bracket, said rear arm pivoting on the said pivotal screw and having a scale to determine the angle of the file to bevel a saw tooth, a nut to tighten said arm in position, and a swivelled springable handle to reciprocally operate the file for filing a saw tooth.
