[57] In the recovery of bitumen from bituminous tar sands by way of a hot water extraction procedure, centrifuging said product to remove part of the mineral matter and water and subsequently settling the centrifuged froth in a settling zone to provide a settler froth product and a settler tailings product, the settler tailings product being thereafter subject to centrifugal force wherein a second centrifugal froth product is recovered and combined with the settler froth product to provide a final bitumen product substantially reduced in mineral matter and water, and suitable for petroleum refining.
