People of the Boreal Forest Photo Gallery
This gallery of photographs taken by Terry Garvin over a period of 50 years is a dynamic part of the People of the Boreal Forest Website, which is part of the Alberta Online Encyclopedia. The site was developed as an Aboriginal Centennial project by the Heritage Community Foundation in partnership with Terry Garvin and the Aseniwuche Winewak First Nation. Funding support was provided by Alberta Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development (now Alberta Aboriginal Relations).

![Janvier](javascript:ImgPop('Janvier', 'This is the community of Janvier in the 1950s, 1960s, and early 1970s. This image was taken in 1965. The community on the left is Metis, the community to the right is the Janvier Indian Band whose language is Chipewyan. This community lies along the Christina River, seventy air miles southeast of Fort McMurray. It's link to the "outside", i.e. other communities, is by aircraft in emergencies and for government and business personnel. The Northern Alberta Railway provides by-weekly passenger and supply service to Chard, a railway station terminal, approximately ten kilometres from the community. In the 1980s, a highway linked Fort McMurray, Janvier, Conklin, and Lac La Biche. ![Bearberry](javascript:ImgPop('Bearberry', 'Bearberry - This plant produces a hard red berry which is eaten by animals and birds. The leaves ripen in the fall, turning red, then brownish. Aboriginal traditional practice is to pick the fall leaf, dry it, grind it, and smoke it as traditional tobacco. The dried leaves may be mixed with other plants, such as red willow bark. Such mixture also goes by the name of kinnickinnick. This plant grows in many environments, seeding itself in habitat ranging from wet bogs to rock-covered ground. It grows low to the ground and often among blueberry and cranberry plants. Bearberry may be picked in all seasons. Note: The traditional definition of kinnickinnick is "mixture", and is not the bearberry itself, as some book descriptions of bearberry indicate. Archie and his wife Noreen do not eat the Northern pike; other fish are preferred.
