The Alberta Studies

Sacred Site Documentation This section of the Understanding Traditional Use Study Website showcases the findings of a number of participating Aboriginal communities. The communities undertook TUS as a part of the Alberta Aboriginal Relations (formerly Alberta Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development) cross-ministry initiative begun in 2000.

All projects undertook research into primary and secondary resources, interviews and discussions with Elders and other knowledge keepers, and mapping and recording of traditional uses. Experts involved included archeologists, paleontologists, historians, environmentalists, mapping specialists and others.

This section shares with Aboriginal communities, teachers, students, elected officials, industry and the general public some Study findings. These include research materials, selected oral histories, maps and photographs. The TUS is a tool for validating traditional knowledge and the Understanding Traditional Use Study Website makes it possible to share it with a range of users.
