Legacy

Grant MacEwan in 1947 in the type of rural setting he so enjoyed.

One of western Canada's most influential people of the twentieth century, Grant MacEwan has authored or co-authored over 50 books and contributed to various agricultural magazines and daily newspapers. A recipient of numerous prestigious wards his work as a popular historian and savvy politician has not gone unnoticed. Well respected by academic specializing in western Canadian history, MacEwan's works capture the spirit of the west and make history accessible to all ages. A fine storyteller demonstrates his knowledge of western Canadian history through the sharing of many of his own personal experiences. Grant MacEwan is the classic westerner-he was born in Manitoba, farmed in Saskatchewan, studied in Iowa, and practiced politics in Alberta. His interest in all things agriculture is reflected in many of his writings as he captures the steadfastness and determination of western Canada's pioneer families.

His contributions to western Canadian history, agricultural practices, and politics in Alberta continue to grow. A man of many skills, he is perhaps best remembered to for his wholesome and simple lifestyle. Through much of his work MacEwan advocates conscientious use of resources, and reveals his love for the land. He raised conservation issues long before they entered the mainstream and his words continue to have an impact on young and old Canadians alike.

This section demonstrates the various ways Albertans have paid tribute to Grant MacEwan. His legacy is clearly far reaching. As a popular historian and author, it is only fitting that a college in Edmonton be named in his honor. Every year, Grant MacEwan College pays tribute to their namesake by hosting a number of events collectively known as MacEwan Day. Elsewhere across the province, the name Grant MacEwan is visible. In Calgary's northeast one can find Grant MacEwan Elementary School.
