Family And Work

The MacEwans pose for news feature on how well-known Winnipegers look at home

With a Masters degree under his belt, Grant MacEwan was ready to face the world of work. He reported to the University of Saskatchewan on July 2, 1928 with a certain sense of confidence and optimism. He worked closely with his mentor Dean Rutherford Professor A. Shaw, head of the animal husbandry department. In addition to his research he was expected to lecture three times a week and judge livestock. In fact, his summers mainly consisted of traversing Saskatchewan's prairies attending livestock fairs. Grant was content at the University of Saskatchewan, located on the east bank of the North Saskatchewan River providing Grant with a lovely view of Saskatoon. In a short amount of time Grant built a strong, engaging relationship with his colleagues and students. He was well-received among students for not just lecturing but having fruitful conversations with students and was receptive to their thoughts and ideas.

Heather MacEwan and father. The Relationship was to become close and satisfying. Frequently absent, the intensity of his attention when present seemed to bridge the gaps. Whether choosing ponies, instructing her in riding or introducing her to the other mysteries of life "he was always a most patient father", said Heather

Since his days as a student at the Ontario Agricultural College and Iowa State University he never lacked female companionship. With his rugged good looks and jovial personality Grant developed relationships with a number of women; however, none of these relationships evolved into anything resembling a steady girlfriend. Grant met his future bride at a Halloween dance party in 1931. Though he attended the event with another teacher he became instantly interested in a young woman dressed as an Arabian dancer.
