Heritage Community Foundation Methodist Missionaries in Alberta

The first Christian missionaries in present-day Alberta came during a period of enormous change in the land.  These Methodist missionaries, such as Robert Rundle, Henry Steinhauer and George and John McDougall were witnesses and active agents in shaping the emerging society.

The Heritage Community Foundation and its partners are pleased to present this website resource to help Alberta's history come alive for everyone.  Encounter these early missionaries and the mission sites they established. Explore their work and vocation in relation to the Christian tradition, mission organizations, Hudson's Bay Company, First Nations and the emerging Canadian society.

Many questions surround the missionary era.  Why did they come? How did they understand their mission? What was their experience of First Nations people and the era of dramatic changes? What was their role in the development of the society? These and other questions are addressed using text, images, audio and video presenting the life and times of these men and women and the people they encountered in the land.
