A mission was a community. It was a meeting place for people of  different backgrounds and cultures who came to live, attend school, seek medical attention, attend services, and discuss issues. A mission also was a place where life changed significantly-missionaries and non-aboriginal settlers became pioneers and Aboriginal people began a more settled way of life. Regardless of its ultimate success, each mission reflected the personalities of the missionaries who established it, the communities who lived in or nearby it, and the environment in which it developed.

This section presents a brief overview of some of Alberta's prominent  missions sites. Learn how each developed,  find out about related key people and significant events, and discover what has been done to preserve their heritage.
