Facilities

Oil painting by Francis Anne Hopkins. There are a number of facilities in Alberta that exist to promote the visual arts, including various art galleries, museums and training institutions. Previous to the existence of these facilities, artists were required to obtain support from their local communities, using any location available (such as schools, stores, churches and libraries) to display their work. While these locations were perhaps not the ideal setting for the art work, without the supporting facilities that exist today, artists were left little choice.

Edmonton Art GalleryToday Alberta is home to many world-class art galleries and museums. These facilities actively promote and encourage Alberta artists by providing space to exhibit their work. Most major cities in Alberta boast organizations dedicated to promoting and supporting the visual arts. In Edmonton, one can visit the Edmonton Art Gallery and Latitude 53, in Calgary, there is the Art is Vital Gallery and the Glenbow Museum, Art Gallery, Library and Archives, while in smaller cities, such as Grande Prairie, there is the Prairie Gallery. Alberta visual arts facilities provide opportunities to both artists and the general public as they offer a place for the two to meet and share in art.

An important component of the facilities section on this website is the training institutions section, providing information regarding the history of art instruction. Literally every major post-secondary school in Alberta has some form of art program. There are even schools dedicated solely to the arts, such as the Banff Centre. These schools and programs foster a sense of community between artists and foster the development of their craft.
