GLOBAL WOMAN OF VISION - LOIS HOLE

Clip Length: 1:07 minutes

Transcription:

LOIS HOLE: We tried...uh...raising pigs, cattle, chickens, turkeys... We tried a lot of things. None of them really worked very well for us.

And accidentally, we came upon growing vegetables, and next thing I knew people would ask if I had any vegetables to sell, and that's how it started. I sold out of the back door of the house, out of two pails.

LESLEY MACDONALD: Even then, Lois was generous, always throwing in an extra vegetable, or not charging if she thought someone couldn't afford it. As Hole's Greenhouses prospered, that community commitment grew as well.

LOIS HOLE (SOT): Phone first and let me know you're coming, s...then I'll... I'll have a poinsettia for you.

CUSTOMER (SOT): Okay.

LESLEY: Lois and Ted made a decision to give to all charities, and they made siginificant financial contributions to education and the arts, but they continued to live a modest lifestyle.

LOIS: You can only drive one car, live in one house, wear so many clothes, eat so much food. And, once you've gone through all that, and as long as those needs are met, I'm...I'm not terribly fussy about some of these things, anyway.
