Like many lifelong volunteers, Theresa has been volunteering since she was in
school. She was involved in fundraisers held in her northern community for her
school’s sports trips. Their fundraising efforts often made the difference
between travelling by plane or on a very long bus ride to a game site. During
her university years at the University of Lethbridge — while working toward a
degree in psychology — Lightfoot worked for Com Serv and Alberta Community
Living as a counsellor. During this time, she became a citizen advocate under a
program that sought to assist individuals with special needs. Lightfoot helped
clients find better living, working, and educational situations. This experience
says Lightfoot, “Developed into a long-term volunteer role that lasted for over
10 years and brought with it some very treasured friendships.”
As Director of Lightfoot Music for over 14 years, Lightfoot not only taught
private lessons, but also worked with many school groups as a volunteer
accompanist or conductor. She also voluntarily prepared individual students for
their performances. “It was lovely at Christmastime,” says Lightfoot, “ to be
involved in concerts at three or more different schools in the County of Lac St.
Anne, and performing through the year with two or three groups for the seniors'
homes, the Legionnaires, children’s' festivals, Kiwanis festivals and local folk
festivals.” Currently, as a singer/song-writer, she donates CDs of her original
music (under the name Trece) to raise funds for different programs. During 2005,
Lightfoot will be performing at a minimum of three fundraising events in the
Edmonton area.
In addition to her musical volunteerism, was on the board of WEBS (Women
Entrepreneurs Business Solutions). Since 2000, Lightfoot has taken part as a
volunteer marketer with Technology for Success, and is on the nominating
committee of the You're Welcome Awards, both with EDE.
