Anthracite

Category : Locality

The Canadian Anthracite Company mined anthracite, a nonbituminous variety of coal, in this area from 1886 to 1887, when the sale of coal diminished. Mr. HW. McNeil, an American entrepreneur, took over the mine in 1891 and kept it operating until the fall of 1904, when it was officially closed. The post office closure followed 7 March 1905, after many former residents of the village of Anthracite moved to Canmore.

Approximately 6 km east north-east of Banff.
