The lake derives its name from the mountain located at its south end, locally known as "Barrier Mountain" or "The Barrier." This mountain was a barrier to north-south travel along the Kananaskis River before the present road was constructed. The mountain's official name is now Mount Baldy. The name for the lake was approved 1 November 1956.

Approximately 22 km east south-east of Canmore.
