Blackfriars Peak

Category : Peak

In 1901, Dr. Jean Habel (see Mount Habel) suggested the name Blackfriars for this 3210 m mountain, after the "Schwartze Monche" in the Bernese Oberland; "schwartze" means black and "monche" means friar or monk. In 1921, it was proposed that the name be changed to "Blackmonks" because the name Blackfriars was duplicated nearby in British Columbia. In November of 1921, the name Dais Mountain was approved for the feature. The name Blackfriars was resubmitted by Alfred J. Ostheimer III in honour of Jean Habel's original suggestion. The name Blackfriars Peak for the feature in Alberta is used locally, especially among mountaineers, and appears in the Climber's Guides.
