Old Fort

This may be the site of the North West Company's Fort Athabaska River, built by Peter Pond in 1778 on the west bank of the Athabasca River about 50 kilometres upstream from Lake Athabasca. It was known as the Old Pond Fort, or the Old Establishment for many years. It was the only fort in the area until 1788 when the first Fort Chipewyan was built.

Approximately 173 km north of Fort McMurray.
