This Edmonton, Dunvegan and British Columbia Railway station was named in 1916 for Esher, Surrey, England, where J. B. Prest, engineer of the railway company, lived for a time. Other places named by Mr. Prest are Prestville, Surbiton, Woking and Wanham. From the Old English esher can mean ash tree, boundary or ploughshare. From the Old Norse and Gaelic related meanings include a border or a rim. |
