Alberta Community Development is the department responsible for maintaining and facilitating
Albertans’ participation in the cultural, social and economic development of their community
and their province. This is achieved through the fostering of community values, human rights,
ideals of fairness and inclusion, and preservation of Alberta’s history and natural
resources.
Alberta Community Development also serves to link the province’s government with its
voluntary sector. It promotes a culture of public initiative and community spirit by offering
assistance to those who volunteer and organizations that use the services of volunteers. The
linkage between the government and the voluntary sector is vital, in that it allows needs within
society to be identified and filled by specialist organizations, while at the same time offering
legislative guidance and assistance. In short, it provides a method of maximizing resources
for the public good, while minimizing the cost of providing those resources.
Alberta Community Development performs a significant portion of its role through the
administration of the
Wild Rose Foundation . The Wild Rose Foundation, governed by seven board members,
was created in 1984 by the Government of Alberta through the Wild Rose Foundation Act.
Its function is to encourage charitable, philanthropic, humanitarian and public-spirited
acts, in addition to promoting and supporting volunteerism within Alberta. As part of this
mandate, the Wild Rose Foundation reviews funding applications by non-profit and voluntary
organizations and provides appropriate resources. It also provides necessary information
and support for volunteers and the groups that they serve.
Alberta Community Development acts as a liaison between the Government of Alberta
and the province’s voluntary sector. This role is vital in promoting a spirit of
volunteerism, philanthropy and public service.
