In 1972 the Alberta Oilers was
founded as a member of the new World Hockey Association,
but in 1973 there was no deal to have the team represent
Edmonton and Calgary, and it became the Edmonton Oilers.
In January 1979, the Edmonton Oilers
signed on Wayne Gretzky, who later became a phenomenon
in hockey history.
When the WHA ceased to operate at the
end of the season in 1979 the Edmonton Oilers, New
England Whalers, Quebec Nordiques and Winnipeg Jets,
become members of the NHL.
In May 1980, the Atlanta Flames moved
and became the Calgary Flames.
The
80s were a good decade for Alberta hockey teams. The
Oilers won their first playoff series in 1981 and were
in the playoffs of 1982 and 1983 and won their first
Stanley Cup in 1984. The team won the cup again in 1985.
In 1987 and 1988, the Oilers won the Stanley Cup for a
third and fourth time, while the Flames took it 1989.
Playing at Boston Gardens in 1990,
the Oilers won their fifth Stanley Cup, and their first
Stanley Cup on the road.
The Oilers won in a playoff series in
1997, and again in 1998. The Flames entered the Stanley
Cup playoffs in 2004, only to be narrowly beaten by the
Tampa Bay Lightning in the Cup final.
