During the Second World War, there
was little football in Alberta. In 1945, the Calgary
team became the Stampeders, and won the 1949 Grey Cup.
The Edmonton Eskimos lost the 1952
Grey Cup, but went on to win three straight from 1954 to
1956.
The Canadian Football Council was
formed with the merger of the Western Inter-Provincial
Football Union united with the Inter-provincial Rugby
Football Union in 1956. The Canadian Football League was
established in 1958 when the Canadian Football Council
was renamed.
The Calgary Stampeders won the Grey
Cup in 1971. Edmonton was unsuccessful in bringing home
the Grey Cup in 1973 and 1974, but won in 1975 against
Montreal. The Calgary Stampeders recorded their third
Grey Cup win Cup in 1992 as they defeated Winnipeg.
Edmonton challenged Winnipeg to win the Grey Cup in
1993. The Calgary Stampeders won the Grey Cup for the
fourth time defeating Hamilton in 1998, and returned to
win the Cup in 2001 against Winnipeg.
Edmonton appeared in the Grey Cup
game in 1977 losing to the Alouettes, but they met again
in 1978 and in the 1979 Grey Cup games with Edmonton
winning both. The Eskimos took the Grey Cup in 1980
defeating the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The Grey Cup was
taken by the Eskimos in 1981 against Ottawa, and again
in 1982 defeating the Toronto Argos. The Edmonton
Eskimos lost the Grey Cup in 1986, but returned in 1987
to win over Toronto. In 1990, the Edmonton Eskimos were
defeated by Winnipeg in the Grey Cup game. The Eskimos were
upset by Toronto in the Grey Cup game in 1996, and in
1997, Saskatchewan took the Cup defeating Edmonton. The
Grey Cup game was played in Edmonton in 2002, but the
Eskimos did not win over Montreal. A year later,
Edmonton faced Montreal again to finally win the Grey Cup.
