Native and Métis Medicinal Foods

Knowledgeable Native and Métis women used herbs and plants to heal illnesses and soothe pain. High bush cranberry bark was used to relieve pain. Taken internally, Echinacea root was used to boost the immune system. Applied topically, it has anesthetic, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. Wintergreen was used to alleviate kidney stones. Lady Slipper was taken to relieve female disorders. There were many other remedies. Numerous European fur traders and explorers credited their very survival, especially during their first winter, to the generosity and help of Native people.
