Council handles issues that affect the collective interests of the eight
Métis settlements. It has legal control over land, such as timber and

with harvesting issues such as hunting, trapping and fishing. Métis
Settlements General Council has five elected councilors from each of the
eight settlements. These forty elected councilors in turn elect a
four-member executive that consists of a president, vice-president,
treasurer, and secretary. The executive council holds a variety of
portfolios ranging from intergovernmental relations, finance, land and
resources to infrastructure, education and Communications. It has
established three corporations to advance the economic development of
the eight Settlements. These corporations are MSGC Oil & Gas, Settlement
Sooniyaw Corporation and Settlement Investment Corporation.
Métis Settlements General Council is the political voice of the eight
Métis settlements and is the sole political representative at the
national level. It continues to work towards improving government
legislation pertaining to the Métis settlements, to enhance
communication between the settlements and the Alberta government, and to
promote and develop self-reliant initiatives on the settlements.
