The BeginningsThe People and Their CommunitiesCulture and Lifeways
Arts

The Métis people have always had a strong history of creative and artistic endeavour with the dance and fiddle musical traditions, story telling, and art production. This long artistic tradition is alive and well today, thanks to the efforts of the contemporary Métis arts community..

Métis writers like Maria Campbell have produced books, stories and scripts for plays and other productions. Métis writers are represented in all genres of writing such as poetry, fiction, non-fiction, children’s literature, playwriting and television and film scriptwriting.

The musical traditions of the Métis live on in a wide array of Métis performers who play everything from traditional fiddle music to country and jazz forms. Many are producing CDs to preserve and teach about Métis musical heritage, while others, such as those who perform in Métis dancing groups, share culture in live, vibrant fashion.

Métis painters, illustrators, carvers and sculptors have also kept Métis heritage alive by producing works that reflect both traditional and contemporary Métis culture, values and history.

Within all the areas of the arts, Métis artists and performers have ensured the preservation and evolution of Métis creative heritage, while bringing a wider awareness of their culture to others.
