To settle means to build permanent houses on the land and live there. When they arrived, Ukrainian immigrants (people who come into a country to live) did not settle on the open prairie lands that stretch across the southern half of the Prairie Provinces. Instead, the Ukrainians settled on lands that were near the forests further north. You can visit the Ukrainian Cultural Village just east of Edmonton to see what an old homestead is like.
