Arts

There is a thriving artistic community in Alberta, from the visual, commercial and performing arts, stimulated and sheltered by museums, galleries, opera companies, theatre festivals and writers organizations.

The Edmonton Art Gallery and the Glenbow Museum of Calgary have been on the forefront of the artistic community of Alberta, displaying paintings, sculpture and other visual arts events. There are symphony orchestras in both Edmonton and Calgary, as well as an opera company in Edmonton and the Calgary Opera Association. The Alberta Ballet, which has its home in Edmonton, has been active since 1966 and the company performs both classical and modern pieces. The Fringe Festival, an annual theatre festival, roars through several Albertan communities every August. It is a must see event, so get out there and enjoy!

Alberta is also home to several authors and poets, such as Greg Hollingshead, Rudy Wiebe and Robert Kroetsch, who have won Canada's highest literary honor, the Governor's General Award. In recent years, Alberta has provided a setting for movies and cinema and the Banff Centre for the Arts hosts a television and movie festival.
