Calcification

Calcification takes place in areas where there is a lot of grass. Grasses return basic materials such as calcium and magnesium to the upper soil layers, thereby maintaining a non-acid, nutrient-rich environment. The resulting soils are known as Chernozemic soils. These types of soils dominate the grassland and parkland natural regions of Alberta.
