Calgary

Calgary, which rests on the Bow and Elbow Rivers, was the first city incorporated in what we now call Alberta (1893). The settlement of the area is far older than 1893 however: the Blackfoot, Sarcee and Stoney settled in the area; David Thompson spent the winter of 1787 nearby; and the North West Mounted Police set up shop, at Fort Calgary, in 1873.

Calgary has also been the home of miners, ranchers, oilmen, railroad workers and farmers. Calgary is the largest city in southern Alberta with a population, in 1996, of 768,082. And Calgary continues to grow, with people attracted to its expanding and diverse economy, its climate and amenities.

Calgary supports several museums, such as the Glenbow, a University and the second-largest zoo in Canada. Calgary was the host of the 1988 Winter Olympics and is the annual host of the world-famous Calgary Stampede which was first celebrated in 1912.
