Devon, Present-Day

Devon is considered today a young family community and is rapidly growing. As of May 2000, the population was approximately 4,808. Many people are going to the area to retire. The closeness of the town to Edmonton, the International Airport, and several tourist attractions makes it an ideal community.

Currently, Devon has an economy based on oil, natural gas, agricultural products, tourism, research and manufacturing. Devon is the only community in the Edmonton region that owns and operates its own water, sanitary sewer and natural gas distribution and treatment systems.

The North Saskatchewan River provides great opportunities for recreation and tourism activities. Devon has numerous outdoor recreation activities such as hiking, skiing, fishing, boating, gold panning, tennis, baseball, waterskiing, and camping with one of the best campgrounds in the region. Devon also features many tourist destinations such as the Devonian Botanic Garden which features floral gardens and a Japanese garden, the Canadian Petroleum Interpretive Centre located on the site of the famous oilfield, and the Rabbit Hill Ski Area.
