Armonia Italian Dancers Association

The Armonia Italian Dancers Association is a non-profit organization established in 1998. Its main objectives are:

• to provide the opportunity to members of the Italian community and the community at large to learn, perform, and present Italian folk-dancing within the Italian community and the community at large;

• to provide the opportunity to its members to appreciate, learn, preserve and share with others the Italian cultural heritage;

• to organize and/or provide the opportunity to its members to participate in community, cultural, and social activities.
The Armonia Italian Dancers Association participates in the activities of the Santa Maria Goretti Parish in Edmonton and is a member of the National Congress of Italian Canadians, Edmonton District. The Association is registered as an Italian non-profit cultural organization with the Italian Consulate in Edmonton, and as well, the Association collaborates with and participates in the activities of other organizations.

The Armonia Italian Dancers Association accepts children, young people and adults as dance students, and registration is open to both Italians and non-Italians.
History

The Armonia Italian Dancers Association was formed on October 26, 1998 by a group of young people and parents dedicated to keeping the Italian culture alive through traditional Italian cultural music and Italian folk-dances. The costumes of the dancers are fashioned after traditional costumes of Italy.
The Association is registered under The Societies Act of Alberta. The significance of the name "Armonia" or "harmony" as it translated into English is twofold - harmony as it related to music in combination with dancing, and harmony and co-operation with the association itself and with the community. Dancers, parents, and family members are encouraged to work together and have fun together. Teamwork, collaboration, and mutual respect are highly stressed.
The Armonia Italian Dancers have performed at events such as Celebration of Nations Festival, Heritage Days Festival, Alberta Winter Games, Giovanni Caboto Festival, and Santa Maria Goretti Feast Day Celebration. The Armonia Italian Dancers perform at cultural, community and special events.
