Temperance

Temperance is related to but different from prohibition, which is the legal restriction of making, transporting, selling, and drinking of alcoholic beverages. Temperance involves the personal decision or pledge to drink alcohol in moderation, if at all, and to not take any other intoxicating drugs. Today that would mean drugs like ecstasy, L.S.D., or even marijuana. The Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) was arguably the greatest temperance advocate. After prohibition in Alberta ended in 1923, the WCTU turned its attention to encouraging temperance. It set up numerous departments that were each responsible for different methods of reforming society. The Famous 5 and many other leading feminists each promoted temperance and other social reforms that were closely tied to the Social Gospel movement.
