Social Life   Community Improvement Organizations

In early 20^th century Alberta, there were numerous women's organizations. These organizations covered a wide range of origins and interests. Some, like the United Farm Women of Alberta (UFWA), were auxiliaries of the political parties in government; others, like the Alberta Women's Institute, had no political leanings. Some, like the Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU), were religiously based; others, like the Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire, focused on their cultural ties to England. Some organizations recruited just a local membership, such as the Red Deer Quota Club; and others recruited members from across the province. Although they differed in many ways, all these organizations shared common goals: to bring women together and to improve community life.
