Community Organization
Organizations
Organizations play an important role in society in a number of ways such as recreating
and expanding social relationships, providing a sense of security and companionship,
promoting personal growth and family and community action.
The formation of female specific organizations in Central Alberta developed for many reasons.
Many of these female organizations encouraged action through involvement in emerging community issues. They provided rural women with a voice and opportunity to discuss with their communities and local government on issues affecting the home, family and community. These organizations also allowed an opportunity for women to share information and develop personal skills in leadership.
Organizations were formed with
different purposes which were usually religious, social, economic or
political. They were also part of a long tradition of women's activism in
local communities.
Many of these local organizations drew
their members from the local area and surrounding communities. Members
included women who were involved in local businesses and professional
women, as well as young girls for the reasons of education and
socialization.
