Nursing and Medicine

QuickLinks

Women's interest in health care led many to become involved in nursing and medicine. In particular, nursing became a very popular profession for women in the early 20th century. Along with teaching, it was one of the few professions that provided women with opportunities for career advancement. Also, like teaching, it was seen as falling into line with women's natural care-giving role. However, becoming a nurse was a challenging process, meant to weed out those who did not have the stamina or stomach for hospital work.
