First Bridge Plaque
Plaque commemorating the first bridge constructed west of the Great Lakes. The bridge was built in 1862, along the Fort Edmonton - St. Albert Trail.
Plaque reads:
The First Bridge
Crossing the Sturgeon River, to get from St. Albert to Fort Edmonton, was a wet and muddy event. In 1862, with the help of settlers, Father Albert Lacombe, O.M.I. built the first bridge west of the Great Lakes. A toll was collected, except on Sundays. The crossbar of the cross is from a timber of the original bridge.
