6 Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers
The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) is the consolidated
organization of companies that discover, develop and produce Canada's
petroleum and natural gas resources. CAPP represents 140 member companies
who are involved in approximately 97 percent of Canada's natural gas,
crude oil, oil sands and elemental sulphur. The industry CAPP represents
is worth approximately $65 billion CDN per year and is a major
component of the Canadian economy.
CAPP plays an active role in sponsoring research directed at improving the
oil industry's environment, health and safety performances. Projects
sponsored by the CAPP have contributed to these areas by reducing
emissions, implementing narrower drilling sites to reduce environmental
impact, reclaiming lands and understanding the oil industrys impact on
animals, such as caribou and grizzly bears.
Since 1970, the CAPP has been involved in various studies including
- Identification of cost-effective methods of controlling losses of natural gas from production facilities
- Development of effective management practices for handling hydrocarbon-contaminated soils
- Monitoring of the effects of oil exploration on Atlantic fisheries
- Improvement of land reclamation at oil sands sites
- Understanding the effects of sour gas on humans
Research conducted by the CAPP has helped to improve the efficiency of oil
and natural gas production while reducing the effects these processes have
on the environment.
