Logo of the Dante Alighieri SocietyThis oral history project was initiated by Sabatino Roncucci, a founder of the Dante Alighieri Society, and interviews were conducted by Mr. Roncucci and Giancarlo Grelli.  As a leader in the emerging multicultural movement, Mr. Roncucci was concerned about documenting immigration history so that it could be shared not only with the Italian community but also the community at large.  Canada's centenary in 1967 stimulated the public's interest in the diverse ethnicities, traditions and roots of our pluralistic nation.  Across the country, community histories were undertaken by historical societies and, once these were completed, frequently a community museum was established to preserve the oral evidence and objects associated with people's lives.  The oral history tapes were deposited at the Provincial Archives of Alberta and the Heritage Community Foundation was given permission by the Dante Alighieri Society to make use of them on the Celebrating Alberta's Italian Community website.
