Fur Trade Society
Forces of Change
In the 19th century, many forces came into play that served to alter and eventually dismantle fur trade society. These forces, in turn, had a great effect on Aboriginal and mixed blood women both in and outside the fur trade. In general, their role diminished as did fur trade society and they were forced to shape new roles for themselves in a burgeoning Western Canadian society.

Heritage Trails #135 Treaties, Part Three: Treaty 6
Treaty Number 4 was signed in 1874. It was the first treaty to affect an
area in what is now known as Alberta.
But its impact was minor in Alberta compared to that of Treaty Number 6. As
historian Michael Payne points out, Treaty Number 6 covered most of central
Alberta and Saskatchewan, between the North and South Saskatchewan rivers.
