Weed Seed Sterilizer (Patent No: 643913)

Inventor: MacInnis, Donald B.

Location: Calgary

Comments: N/A

Description:
WHAT WE CLAIM AS OUR INVENTION IS:

1. Apparatus for rendering weed seeds sterile without affecting their value for use as fertilizer and food, comprising means for pulping the embryos of seeds, and means for directing seeds to said pulping means, whereby seeds leaving the pulping means are sterile and are ready for use as fertilizer and food.

2. Apparatus for rendering weed seeds sterile without affecting their value for use as fertilizer and food, comprising means for pulping the embryos and albumen of seeds, means for directing seeds to said pulping means, and means for directing the pulped seeds away from the pulping means, said seeds leaving the pulping means being sterile and ready for use as fertilizer and food.

3. Apparatus for rendering weed seeds sterile without affecting their value for use as fertilizer and food, comprising a air of parallel rolls normally in longitudinal engagement with each other and forming a nip therebetween, and means for directing seeds to the nip of the rolls to be crushed by said rolls, whereby seeds having passed between the rolls are sterile and ready for use as fertilizer and food.

4. Apparatus for rendering weed seeds sterile without affecting their value for use as fertilizer and food, comprising a pair of parallel rolls normally in longitudinal engagement with each other and forming a nip therebetween, means at the rolls for resiliently urging said rolls together, means connected to at least one roll to rotate the rolls, and means for directing seeds to the nip of the rolls to be crushed by said rolls, whereby seeds having passed, between the rolls are sterile and ready for use as fertilizer and food.

5. Apparatus for rendering weed seeds sterile without affecting their value for use as fertilizer and food, comprising a hopper having a bottom with an outlet therein, and a pair of parallel rolls normally in longitudinal engagement with each other and forming a nip therebetween, said rolls being located with the nip thereof beneath the hopper outlet, said hopper being adapted to direct seeds to the nip of the rolls to be crushed by said rolls, whereby seeds having passed between the rolls are sterile and ready for use as fertilizer and food.

6. Apparatus for rendering weed seeds sterile without affecting their value for use as fertilizer and food, comprising a pair of parallel rolls normally in longitudinal engagement with each other and forming a nip therebetween, means for directing seeds to the nip of the rolls to be crushed by said rolls, a receiver beneath the rolls for catching the crushed seeds therefrom, and means at the receiver for discharging the crushed seeds therefrom.

7. Seed sterilizing apparatus as claimed in claim 6 in which the means at the receiver for discharging seeds therefrom comprises a tube communicating with and extending outwardly from the receiver and having a discharge outlet therein, and an auger extending through the receiver and tube to move seeds along the tube to the outlet thereof.

8. Seed sterilizing apparatus as claimed in claim 7 including power means operatively connected to the rolls and the auger.

9. Seed sterilizing apparatus as claimed in claim 6 including means for directing carbon monoxide into the receiver.
