Automatic Shut-Off for Fuel Injection Pumps (Patent No: 651036)

Inventor: Limbach, Peter

Location: Edmonton

Comments: N/A

Description: The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:

1. In an automatic shut-off for diesel engines of the class having a control rod operable to open and close fuel injection pumps, a body member adapted at one end for attachment to the engine and having a longitudinal bore therethrough, a plunger operable slidably in the bore and connected at one end to the control rod, first spring means reactable between the body member and the plunger to force the plunger normally in a direction to actuate the control rod and close the fuel pumps, a lateral bore in the body member passing through the longitudinal bore, a catch operable slidably in the lateral bore and engageable with the plunger, second spring means associated with the catch and means coupled to the oil pressure of the engine and associated with the catch whereby the catch will be held in engagement with the plunger to hold the control rod in position to open the fuel pumps while the engine is operating and will release the catch to allow the second spring means to disengage the catch from the plunger when the engine oil pressure falls and allow the first spring means to move the plunger and control rod to close the fuel pumps.

2. The automatic shut-off as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the pressure exerted by the first spring means on the plunger is adjustable.

3. The automatic shut-off as claimed in Claims 1 and 2 wherein the pressure exerted by the second spring means on the catch is adjustable.

4. In an automatic shut off for diesel engines of the class having a control rod operable to open and close the fuel injection pumps, a body member adapted at one end for attachment to the engine and having a longitudinal bore therethrough, a plunger operable slidably in the bore and connected at one end to the control rod, first spring means reactable between the body member and the plunger to force the plunger normally in a direction to actuate the control rod and close the fuel pumps, a lateral bore in the body member passing through the longitudinal bore, a catch operable slidably in the lateral bore and having a slot therein through which the plunger may operate slidably, projections stops projecting laterally from opposite sides of the plunger and engageable with the catch to hold the plunger in position to actuate the control rod and open the fuel injection pumps, second spring means associated with the catch and means coupled to the oil pressure of the engine and associated with the catch whereby the catch will be held in engagement with a stop on the plunger to hold the control rod in position to open the fuel pumps by the oil pressure of the engine while the engine is operating and the second spring means will overcome the oil pressure of the engine when the engine oil pressure falls to allow the first spring means to move the plunger and control rod to close the fuel pumps.

5. The automatic shut off as claimed in Claims 1 and 4 wherein the catch is formed with a bevelled surface and one of the stops on the plunger is formed with a bevelled surface to co-operate with the bevelled surface of the catch to raise the catch as the plunger is moved to the position to act on the control rod and open the fuel pump.
