Stable Dental Pastes Containing Acidulated Fluoro-Phosphate (Patent No: 791684)

Inventor: Stewart, David

Location: Oakville, ON

Comments: N/A

Description: The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:

1. A stable, non-toxic, dental caries-inhibiting paste suitable for use in the home by non-professionals as a supplement to daily use of dentifrices, comprising 35-45% by weight of a particulate abrasive; 40-63.5% by weight of an acidulated fluoro-phosphate solution; and an amount of a compatible gelling agent effective to provide a desired paste consistency, the particles of said abrasive each comprising a particle of hard inorganic carrier material having a mean particle size in the range of 4-30 microns and bearing a continuous surface covering of at least one hard, substantially water-impervious, highly polymerized and thermosetting synthetic resin material capable of both isolating said fluoro-phosphate solution from said inorganic carrier material and providing said particles with an adequate dental abrasive characteristic, the mean particle size of said coated particles being in the range of 5-50 microns, said fluoro-phosphate solution having a fluoride content of 1.0-2.0% by weight of said solution.

2. A paste according to claim 1, wherein said particulate abrasive constitutes about 40% of the total weight of the paste, said fluoro-phosphate solution constitutes about 58% of the total weight of the paste and has a fluoride content of about 1.25% by weight of the solution, and said gelling agent constitutes about 2% of the total weight of the paste.

3. A paste according to claim 1, wherein said resin is a highly polymerized cross-linked thermosetting resin, and said gelling agent is a methyl cellulose.
