Edmonton District
The National Congress of Italian-Canadians, Edmonton
District, is allied with the National Congress of
Italian-Canadians. At the local level, the Congress liaises
with various organizations in the Italian community and
serves as a vehicle for communication and
co-operation. The Congress is responsible for a range
of community outreach activities that link the Italian
community with the community-at-large, particularly in the
area of education, multiculturalism and rights and
responsibilities.
Their aims include:
- Finding ways and means for nurturing the cultural
identity of Canadians of Italian descent in order to
build a stronger Edmonton, Alberta and Canada.
- Ensuring that Italian immigration history is recorded
and shared with the Italian community of Edmonton and
the community at large.
- Ensuring that the diverse ethno-cultural makeup of our
city, province and country is acknowledged by citizens
and government alike in the interest of all.
- Finding ways to bring together ethno-cultural
communities and the cultural mainstream so that
ethno-cultural concerns are not viewed as a minority
interest.
- Promoting the integration of Italian-Canadian culture
into the life of Edmonton. The Board thinks that it is
imperative to focus on what unites us as citizens of
Canada rather than what divides us.
