This section of the Celebrating Alberta's Italian
Community website provides contextual information-
Canadian, Albertan and local. It includes historical,
demographic, cultural, economic and social
information. It is a primary resource on an area of Alberta's history
that has not been previously documented-either in the form
of print-based history or on the World Wide
Web.
In Italian, la storia, is both history and story.
The website includes both and makes use of information
obtained through oral histories, a primary tool when
documenting community history, as well as a range of
documentary sources. It puts the Italian community on
the map and documents its contribution to every aspect of
Canadian and Albertan life.
In this section, we read and listen to the stories that contributed to the
making of Alberta. We examine the historical circumstances that led to Italian emigration, and the resultant immigration patterns that developed in Canada, more specifically in the
Province of Alberta, and particularly in the
cities of Edmonton and Calgary.
We outline the political and economic factors in Italy and Canada that led to successive influxes
of emigration from Italy. World events also influenced the attitude toward and treatment of ethnic immigrants
and the site explores these issues and challenges.
