Life in Edmonton:

  • Paolo bought a ticket to Edmonton and moved in 1950. During this time he worked at many jobs including running a restaurant, and a job with the federal government.

  • His wife came over in 1952 and they lived in a boarding house on 97th Street and 103 Avenue. Eventually they bought a house and rented rooms out to other Italians.

  • Paolo enjoyed making home made wine from 1954 until 1975.

  • Paolo and his wife have one daughter and two grandsons.

  • His daughter was born in Italy in 1926 and came to Edmonton in 1954.

  • Paolo sponsored some of his relatives over the years, and finally became a Canadian citizen himself in 1955.

  • When not working, Paolo likes to work in his garden. He got seeds from his sister in Italy so he could grow Italian vegetables.

  • Paolo feels that Italians as a group were not respected by the wider society. However, he remains proud of his Italian heritage.

  • Paolo has always felt that he made the right decision in coming to Canada.
