Rudy Cavaliere was born in Grimaldi, in the Italian region of Calabria in
1946, and came with his
Mother Franca and younger brother Paul (born 1949) to Kapuskasing,
Ontario, in 1955, where they met up with his father Ugo.
Rita (nee Vecchio), also from Grimaldi, arrived in Edmonton with her
Mother Maria Teresa and two brothers, Antonio (Tony)
and Silvano (Ralph) in 1955 when she was almost 11 years old.
Many members of her extended family were already in Edmonton
including her Father Giovanni Battista and brothers Serafino
(Sam) and Fiore.
Rita and Rudy married in 1968 and have two sons, Ernest
and Frank. Rudy and Rita are both teachers though Rita has
worked for many years in the medical practice of her brother
Silvano as the manager. Rudy retired in 2000. He
is an excellent carpenter (carpentry was in Rudy's family background, and his first enterprise involved repairing
boats) as well as a Mac computer aficionado. Both of them have been involved in the Italian
community, with Santa Maria Goretti Parish, as well as with a range
of societies.
The Cavaliere Family Photo Album
Rudy started photographing in the Italian community about 1977 and is now the Graphic Editor and Photographer for the
Il Congresso newspaper. With Sab Roncucci and
others, he was a founder of the Appennini Dancers in 1979/80, an organization enjoying vitality to this
day!
The interview was conducted by Adriana Albi Davies, Ph.D., Executive
