Sam Scrivano was born in Spezzano Sila, in 1901. At this
time the village had a population of 40,000 people. Sam's
family (4 brothers, 3 sisters) lived outside the village.
His dad worked some land with Sam's help, and they got to
keep part of the harvest. Two of his sisters had already emigrated to Edmonton
and one of them, Assunta Gaudio, sent for him. Sam made
the journey to Edmonton in January of 1923, with a sister
and her friend. Shortly after his arrival, a brother-in-law
got him a job with the CNR, where he worked for 42 years.
While in Italy in 1925, Sam met a young woman named Maria
and they got married. They moved back to Edmonton and
started a family, having three children: Mario, Ilda and
Elda.
The interview was conducted by ... for the
Italians Settle in Edmonton Project
in 1983 resulting in the commemorative booklet of the same
name.
This was a 25th anniversary project of the Santa Maria
Goretti Parish. A Society was set up and a committee struck
to undertake the research. The President was Frank Sdao and
the research was led by Dr. Adriana Albi Davies.
