Reflections on the Second Rome Conference

The Italian government does not do things by halves. The Second Rome Conference on Immigration, November 28 to December 3, was a massive undertaking by any stretch of the imagination. At times as I wandered around the huge subterranean Ergife Conference Centre I felt like one of the extras on the set of some modern-day Ben-Hur, or, more somberly, one of the poor minor sinners in Dante's Inferno.

Italian Settlement at Venice, Alberta

The first settlers of Venice arrived in North America in 1911. The small group landed at New York harbour from northem Italy and spent a brief period of time working on the railroads in Boston. Moving west with the wave of immigrants, the group of young men settled in Kansas for a year, where they worked in the coal mines.

 
Calgary Italian Club - 50mo Anniversario

A celebration for the 50th anniversary of The Italian Calgary Club lasted three days. Friday evening was celebrated by all the members of the Club; Saturday's Gala had the presence of various politicians, and on Sunday a special mass was held.

History of the Calgary Italian Club organized in 1952 and celebrating the 50th anniversary. The Club was born from the need of the Italian community to get together, to find the moral support in a country so strange, and to exchange news from Italy. Following the anniversary, the writer encourages the Club to find a new, important reason to improve in a community so different from 50 years ago.

 
A Tribute to the Longevity of Juventus

The Calgary Juventus Sports Club was founded in 1957 by one of the first waves of young Italian immigrants to make Canada their new home. Bringing along with them their hopes and dreams for a new future and a new beginning they also wished to maintain their cultural ties which were strong between them. Aside from language and cuisine they needed something that involved the entire community and something that they could rally behind. Soccer was that strong tie that fulfilled this need. Thus, the creation of the Calgary Juventus Sports Club which is now the oldest organized sports club in Calgary.

 
Romulus & Remus Club 25 anni dopo......ed e stata "una bella figura"

Month 4 Year 19 Volume 4

Romulus & Remus of Lethbridge celebrates the 25th anniversary of the club. Many guests participated to the special evening: among them the Consul of Italy Pirluigi Trombetta and the mayor of Lethbridge Robert Tarleck. The president of the Club welcomes the guests to a sumptuous supper.
