Egale Listservs Back Online

October 28, 2005

Dear egale-e list members,

I am happy to announce that the Egale-e list is back online and invite you to join/rejoin Egale Canada’s general discussion list; the list has been offline due to a disk failure. All past members will need to resubscribe. More info about the list outage is below.

To subscribe or resubscribe to egale-e:
Send an email message to majordomo@lists.egale.ca. (Do not reply to this message). The body of your message should consist of the following one line (do not add any other comments or questions):

sub egale-e

The subject line can contain anything or be left blank. You will receive several messages, one telling you that the command did not succeed. This just means that you still have to confirm that you want to join by following the instructions in the other message. The easiest way is to reply to it with one word: accept. You will receive your password and the list policy (please read it).

You can change your password to something more memorable and add aliases for your other email accounts by managing your subscription at the address given in the welcome message.

Digests: if you previously subscribed to a digest version, let me know the type and frequency and I’ll set that up for you.

Remember to set your email program to send “plain text” (not html, formatted, or rich text). When sending messages to the list in general (after you’ve subscribed) avoid the use of the word subscribe or unsubscribe in the first 10 lines of your message.

List Outage and Egale’s other lists:
The lists hosted by Egale Canada have been off-line due to a catastrophic disk failure on a server operated by Online Policy Group also known as Queernet, a non-profit GLBTQ-supportive service in San Francisco (please consider a donation to help them keep this valuable service running at www.onlinepolicy.org). Previous subscriber info and past list messages unfortunately were lost. I hope to have most of the other lists restored within a week. Check the Egale Canada website at www.egale.ca and click the E-Communities button for further information.

Thank you for your patience during this extended outage.

Egale is in the process of rebuilding our listserv. During this time, please do not resubscribe to any of the lists.

September 6, 2005

Egale’s listservs are currently off-line. We greatly apologize for this interruption in service. Egale uses a third-party providor, Queernet, to administer our listservs. On September 1, 2005, Queernet’s server suffered a catastrophic disk failure. They are attempting to restore their system, however, there is no guarantee of success.

Queernet (also known as Online Policy Group) is a non-profit organization, and is soliciting donations to help pay for the data recovery.

Egale is taking a wait-and-see approach to the problem with our listservs. We are hopeful that Queernet will be able to restore their system. If this is not the case, however, we will will advise our listserv community through this webpage. It may be necessary for all users to resubscribe to the lists.

We thank you for your patience and understanding.
