A World Of Opportunity:
UWinnipeg Launches Capital Campaign

By Ilana Simon

The University of Winnipeg's 'A World of Opportunity' Capital Campaign will enable the University to serve as a catalyst for downtown revitalization, realize the hopes and dreams of people in our neighbourhood and make a major contribution to the world we live in through the Richardson College of the Environment and other centres of academic excellence, said President and Vice-Chancellor Lloyd Axworthy at the campaign launch.

Dr. Axworthy and Campaign Chair R.M. (Bob) Kozminski announced the $70-million goal of The University of Winnipeg’s ‘A World of Opportunity’ Capital Campaign at the formal launch Nov. 27, 2007 in the beautifully-restored Convocation Hall .

"This is the largest fundraising campaign in the University’s history and a milestone in the life of The University of Winnipeg," said Kozminski. "It's an opportunity to thrive on the world stage and create accessibility and a  world of opportunity for our students. The campaign has the power to change the face of the campus and the face of downtown Winnipeg."

Advance Gifts of $55.5 M
To date, the Campaign has raised an inspiring $55.5 million towards its campaign goal. Significant lead and advance gifts include contributions to establish the Richardson College for the Environment & Science Complex and the CanWest Centre for Theatre & Film. As well, donors have come forward to support areas of academic excellence such as the National Centre for Canadian History, Global College and the Innovative Learning Centre, as well as scholarship and bursary programs including the Opportunity Fund and The Collegiate bursary program.

“I want to thank the Province for giving us their support and thank all of the volunteers who have given of themselves to something they believe in," said Dr. Axworthy, noting UWinnipeg Foundation President Susan Thompson has put together a remarkable board of directors. "The University of Winnipeg has been part of the community for 136 years and and has played a major role in the evolution of this province."

‘A World of Opportunity’ Capital Campaign focuses on the University's strengths and traditions and builds on its vision for the future, Axworthy added. “This vision centres on academic excellence, Aboriginal education, environmental studies and sustainability, and theatre and arts. The capital campaign is an opportunity to do something special and make a difference.”

Kozminski called on alumni, students, friends and supporters of The University of Winnipeg to "partner with us as we shape the University into a national centre of academic excellence,” he said.

Opportunity Fund
Among its many priorities, the Campaign will focus on making a university education accessible to youth who might not otherwise have this chance by showcasing The University of Winnipeg’s Opportunity Fund – a unique bursary program that will provide tuition credits and bursaries to students from Aboriginal, inner-city and war affected and refugee populations.

"The Province of Manitoba is delighted to be a partner in The University of Winnipeg's success," said the Hon. Diane McGifford, Minister of Advanced Education and Literacy. "There is no better way to invest in the Province's future than to invest in our young people."

UWinnipeg Chancellor H. Sanford Riley described the campaign launch as the culmination of many years of hard work and "a chance for citizens to support this great institution of higher education, help community members starting out and on their way up, and support  a vibrant and revitalized downtown."

Riley thanked the Board of Regents for having the vision and courage to make the campaign a priority and UWinnipeg Foundation board members, Dr. Axworthy, Professor Mavis Reimer and Kozminski for their committment and support to The University of Winnipeg.

Extraordinary Campaign
“This is an extraordinary Campaign. We are inspired by the leadership and momentum being built by our Foundation Board and University President together with our entire University community,” said University of Winnipeg Foundation President and C.E.O. Susan Thompson. “Today marks the start of the public phase of our Campaign where every gift brings us closer to the goal of opening the doors to a World of Opportunity for our students.”

David JacksUWSA President David Jacks (pictured left) thanked the University, the Foundation and donors for their committment to affordable and quality education for UWinnipeg students. "We are looking forward to seeing all of the capital campaign goals met," he said at the launch.
